THE ACCELERATED STUDENT’S OPTIONS

The “no-more-math”choice: The student who finishes a Hub Course early is not required to take another  math course this semester.  If a student does not want to take another math course this semester, he/she still needs to complete the “Course Transition Form” in order to take the Final Exam prior to Exam Week.

Other choices for the early finisher:

A Hub student completes the math course before the end of the semester, it gives the student the opportunity to accelerate to the next available Hub course.

The following material describes your options for accelerating to the next course.

Accelerating students should discuss any questions about the options with their instructor.

Will I need a new text book or MyMathLab access code for the new course?

If your new course uses a different textbook, then a new MML access code is required.

MAT 031/032/101 are all in the same textbook.  MAT 102 uses a different textbook.

1) The “Headstart” option: After the 2nd 5-WK/8-WK add period, the Headstart option is the only way to start another course.

You must pre-register for the next course in the Math Hub on next semester’s schedule ** A course begun in FALL semester MUST be paid for and completed during the following SPRING semester.  A course begun in a SPRING semester MUST be paid for and completed during the following SUMMER term. A course begun in a SUMMER term MUST be paid for and completed during the following FALL semester. The course will be paid for when you pay for next semester’s classes.

During the current semester, you will begin work on the next course and work as far as you can.  When next semester rolls around, you will already be pre-registered for that course in the Hub and you will continue working from where you left off on your checklist. *You are responsible for pre-registering for a Math Hub course.  If you wait to register until the Hub classes are full, then you will forfeit the right to use any of your “headstart” materials for the course.

·          * In the event that you should complete the course during the present term, the grade will be recorded on next semester’s transcript for the course that you’ve pre-registered for.  This can only be entered during the week before the next semester’s classes begin and ONLY if the course has been paid for.

·          **A student who completes a “Headstart” course prior to the 5-WK/8-WK “drop/add” deadline MUST register for the course during the 2nd term of the current semester IF the student wants to begin a second Headstart course.

·          A “Headstart” student may not complete the 2nd Project in the “Headstart” course before pre-registering for next semester.

2) The “5-WK/8-WK”option: (This allows you to register for an official 5-WK/8-WK course during this same semester)      (Registration is only available up to the end of the add period for the 2nd 5-WK/8-WK)

All students who receive financial aid, are not a full time student, and want to register for any 2nd 5-WK/8-WK MAT Hub course need to report to the financial aid office immediately in order to find out if more financial aid is available to pay for this new course. You are responsible for payment of all fees/tuition/materials required for this new course.

The course will be added to your FDTC course schedule as a 2nd 5-WK or 8-WK course section.

Your Hub hours and Hub instructor will remain the same.  Attendance is required for this course. Your previous “lecture” hours can be spent working across the hall from the Hub (7107).   You are encouraged to view lecture clips online at your MML website for each specific chapter and section.

If your schedule permits and you desire to attend a lecture period for the new course, you may do that.  The Hub Director can help you find out when possible lectures are available. The lecture will most likely be ahead of where you are in the material.

If you register for a course during the 2nd half semester, you are required to complete all of the material in the course by the last day of the Final Exam Week (not including the make-up date).

Math Hub students will not be allowed to receive a grade of “I” (or incomplete).  Therefore, if the requirements are not completed by the stated dates, you will receive a grade of “F” for the course.

If you have not completed 60% of the material successfully by the FDTC last day to withdraw for the 2nd half semester, then you are strongly urged to withdraw from the course.

If you fail the course, you will have to register (and pay) for the course during a later term at FDTC in order to take the course again.  You may also have to purchase new textbook/MML materials at an additional expense.

DEADLINES:

FULL SEMESTER COURSES: The final exam can be taken early prior to the last two weeks of semester. During the final two weeks of the semester, the exam will not be given to these students.  The final exam must then be taken during the regular, scheduled exam time for their Hub class.

HEADSTART COURSES: Tests & Final Exam can be taken at any open Hub time up to & including the week of exams. **The 2nd Project in the “Headstart” course may not be completed before pre-registering for next semester.  The student may be allowed to begin “Headstart” in another course prior to completion of this 2nd project if grade average is appropriate.

5-WK/8-WK COURSES:  Tests & Final Exam can be taken at any open time up to & including the week of exams.  Appointments still need to made by the student.
